Most Venerable Nim,

It has been a long time since I wrote my last letter and a lot has changed. I hope you arrived safely in the new lands, and that the word of Danica is being well received. Regarding Ethbar, things are improving, but the province is still in the hands of the heathens, and the empire still has not backed the rebels. I believe official backing to be coming shortly. A peace treaty with Phoenix has been signed, freeing up more of the Celestine soldiers, should war break out with the Suul. There are also rumors that Phoenix has plans to join forces with us against the Suul. Celestine soldiers have been building up in the border cities.

Just before the treaty was signed, several powerful and esteemed wizards left from Phoenix. They made a big deal of it, and publicly departed for Charybdis. They went through the Portal on the Silothreni boarder and have not been seen or heard from since. The group encompassed about 50 men and women. I fear that this might be a tactical move on the part of the Phoenicians. I fear that the Empire will be betrayed. Would Phoenix not have the upper hand if they convinced us to fight the Suul and then attacked our back?

On a somewhat happier note, the church is growing quite well, especially here in the Ethbar province. That, however, might have turned into a problem for us. The Suul have declared that worship of Danica is forbidden and punishable by death. The Suul army went through and burned down most of the churches, or desecrated them. Believers are now worshiping in private and are not using churches. Surely Danica will understand, right? Morale, however, is waning amongst the population.

Some believe that the giant fireball from the sky that fell in the desert south of here was a sign from the gods. Some credit Omni, some credit Danica, and some credit the evil of the void. It fell a few weeks back and bright lights lit up the sky coming from the south for a few days. The church has made no specific stance, but I wonder, with your close relationship with Danica, do you know if it was sent from her? If so, what is its meaning?

Trade with the dwarves has improved. They are very receptive to spices that we have here. In exchange, they have been providing us with weaponry and armor. Contact with the people where you are is still strictly controlled. Trading with them is forbidden. The dwarves seem to have a different standard for humans from their lands and us.

The church of Ethenos seems to be growing quite well in the north of the kingdom on the border with the Moring. The Moring adopted the church of Ethenos as their religion of choice. Fortunately, they have done nothing to inhibit the spreading of the word of Danica, but it might prove challenging for our brethren in the north. At least that is what the group of Moring that arrived here last week to support the rebels has reported.

Life for the commoners here is getting harder. Since the rebels lack the force to take on the Suul army directly, they have resorted to strategic attacks on weak points in the Suul defenses. The Suul have recently been taking it out on the commoners and the slaves. The Suul then offered citizenship to anyone willing to betray the rebels. I'm sure the offer is becoming tempting.

Respectfully,

Jasper

Each of you have either been recently transferred here or been captured and brought here in the last 8 weeks. This place is some sort of Suul testing facility. Here you were locked up in damp, dark cells that are barely long enough for you and your cell mate to both lie down at the same time. The food here is terrible and frequently rotting, and the bedding is equally as pathetic.

In the cell block you are in there are 5 small identical cells. There is a heavy metal door that is locked and barred from the outside that the guards occasionally come through to bring you food or water, or worse, to haul you away for tests.

The tests started the day you arrived. You were hauled into a large room with six exits. In the middle of the room was a rack that you were attached to. Above the rack was a humming sphere that had many smaller spheres rotating around it without touching. While on the rack, they injected you with all sorts of liquids, some that burned, some that froze, and all that hurt.

After the round of injected liquids, the sphere was lowered to right over your abdomen. Then something happened. The humming got a lot louder and the spheres rotated faster. The pain that you felt from the injections was nothing compared to what happened next. Your body would start to feel as if it was being torn apart until eventually you would pass out. Your bruised, bloody, and burned body was then deposited back in your cell without much care.

You were given smaller scale tests every couple of days since. The pain was much less severe with these smaller tests, but they still left you battered and bruised. Burns would develop on your skin, even though you were not exposed to any fires. The headaches you would get during the test would last for hours or sometimes days. During the test nausea would start and last for a few hours after the tests. These went on for two to three weeks.

After your bout with injection tests were over, you were brought to another room. Here they would strap you onto a table and cut, poke, and prod you. Frequently, you were tortured to the point of passing out. Sometimes you received healing in the form of potions, but most of the time you were just deposited back into your cell.

It went on this way until recently. No one has come through the cell block door in a long time. You are all very thirsty and hungry. The busy din of noise you can normally hear has stopped. Everything has been silent except for your own voices.

Cell Situation:

  • Hakanai (Jeff) – Gregor (NPC)
  • Pincher (Jason) – Nose (NPC)
  • Bernard (NPC) – Malkus (Sean)
  • Ricochet (Spencer) – ?? (Shon)
  • Fisher (Ryan) – Bridgette (NPC)

Gregor (in Hakanai’s cell)

Gregor was captured a few months before Hakanai and was one of the first people who lived through experimentation that is still alive. Gregor is a physically tough ex-soldier who is now plagued by severe chronic pain. The pain started with the experiments and is getting worse with each experiment. After retiring from soldiering, he became the leader of a mercenary company called [company]. The company was on a mission for the rebellion in Ethbar when they were captured. He loves to tell old war or campaign stories.

Bernard (in Malkus’ cell)

Bernard was one of Gregor’s men in [company] before being captured by the Suul. He doesn’t speak, but uses some form of sign language to communicate. He has been extremely careful never to make any physical contact with Malkus. He is constantly pacing through the small cell. He’s not a very exciting cell mate.

Bridgette (in Fisher’s cell)

Bridgett was a staunch rebel agent before being captured by the Suul. With her slightly olive skin, she could pass as either Suul or Celestine. After being captured she suffered untold abuses before she was brought into the cell with Fisher and discarded. She hates the Suul with a passion and would do anything to rid the world of them. She is both fierce and aggressive and has been beaten nearly to death by the guards on several occasions for her defiance.

Nose (in Pincher’s cell)

Nose is a trusting fellow who got his name from his peculiarly long nose. He seems to have come in with Pincher. He doesn’t appear to be particularly bright, but he’s a man of faith and honesty. He has a military background and is loyal to the country and believes strongly in the rebellion.
