Opportunists
If I remember correctly, religion in Gaia has only recently come back into fashion after a long hiatus by the gods (humanity even forgot their names).  With the sudden resurgence in the popularity of religion it is almost certain that oppotunists will try to step in and create their own religions to swindle the gullible out of money.  (Mort is convinced that Orkistism is one of those religions).  It seems likely that the business of two-bit mages posing as prophets and priests would be booming in Gaia right now.

Religion returned when the gate to the plane of magic was opened.  Danica was the first religion, but Orkist followed immediately after.  Since then other relgions started cropping up all over the world.  I outlined some of my major relgions (for now), but most of them haven't had time to spread their influence very far.

There will be many "opportunist" that crop up from place to place.  You should start seeing that in the future, except for in towns where the Danicians have "taken over".  Building religions are a new thing for me, so I'm starting out slower than the world might otherwise be going.

Magic & Religion
There is no question that Magic is THE competition for religion.  Notice the resurgence of religion in the Celestine empire coincides exactly with the suppression of Magic.  As religious sentiment continues to grow I would expect to see greater polarization between magic and religion.  Religions like Orkistism that rely on people with magery may find the going tough as they compete with the guilds for the same talent pool.  Since government will be naturally hostile to members of the "illegal" mage guilds, some short-sighted officials may look to priests to fill their need for War Mages, scryers and other magical talent, further cementing the relationship between religion and government and funneling government money to the church's coffers.  Man... that is starting to sound pretty apocalyptic.

That is very much what is happening, especially in the eastern part of the kingdom, where the Church of Danica is growing strong.  Danician training is being introduced at the Academy as well.  The illegal guilds are going farther underground and are moving west, to stay out of the influence of the church.  The new Prince in Pangoria is making hiding all the more difficult.

When you reach Pangoria, you will find that mages have been replaced with Priests of Danica.  The church has donated some of it's priests to the betterment of mankind.  Other religions are having a hard time thriving there.  There is plenty of confusion and debate amoungst the populous.

Afterlife

I don't see a lot of mention of afterlife in your descriptions (except for a mention of hell in Orkist's description).  Most religions are deeply concerned with the afterlife and use it as both a whip and carrot to prod their followers into obediance.  It might be good to mention the individual beliefs of each religion.

That is an excellent point, and one that I will try to flush out in the near future.  The reason people care about religion is about the afterlife.  Thanks for bringing that up.  I'll try to have that up by end of day Friday.

Hmm... that gives me an idea -- what if an enterprising group of mages were to create their own religion that centers around the god of magic?  It is no longer magic but is religion.

Don't worry.  I've thought of that.  And I have a plan!

The god of magic has already taken up residence in Phoenix.
