I awoke this morning to find we have a job. I quickly ate some
breakfast and we headed out right away. I'm glad to be leaving that
strange place, however Rachael seemed a lot more friendly than she
had been the night before. Maybe she's just really bitchy at night.
Oh well, I won't be around long enough to find out anyway.

As we left the city I rushed to Spooner. As Darby awoke him I gave
him what food I had brought for him. He gobbled it up like it was
merely a snack. I guess that sleep that Darby had cast on him really
makes him hungry. I'll have to remember that for next time.
Growing impatient I hopped on his back and much to my surprise he
actually let me ride him. I felt a bit awkward and I think he could
tell because he started to become agitated after about ten minutes.
Feeling pretty good about the progress we had made I hopped off and
continued on our way.

As we were walking I asked Griswold how he seemed to know exactly
which direction to go in order to find this black guy we were
tracking. He started to explain to me how he knew but my mind
quickly wandered off and I began to think about what Griswold would
look like if he had a giant boob on his forehead. I think he
realized that I had stopped paying attention or maybe he was just
annoyed that I began to snicker during his explanation. Either way
he abruptly stopped talking and continued what he was doing
previously.

We arrived at the entrance of a mine and tied (or in my case,
chained) our animals up. We navigated our way through the mines and
around a trap of some sort. Before long we reached our destination.
Darby was attacked by one of the black guys who stepped out from
inside the wall (creepy). I sliced his hand almost clean off with my
sword and Stitch promptly banished the creature from our presence. I
turned around to see Mort charging a wraith. Not wanting him to have
all the fun I promptly charged in toe. Two more wraiths appeared and
Mort, Vance, and I continued to beat them down. During the fight
another Varu stepped out of the wall and tried to take a stab at me
with her poisoned poker. I parried her attack since that was the
kind of poking I don't really enjoy. Knowing she could just step
right back into the wall at will I decided it best to leave her to
our mage friends. I continued attacking the wraiths and our battle
was shortly over.

We were told that the Varu got away. Enraged, Mort exlaimed, "Not
this time!!!", and demanded that Griswold and Schmendrick track her
down. In agreement we all waited for their response.

Earlier today Schmedrick stood before us all, pulled out his very tall wizard's hat and proclaimed to us all, "I am Schmendrick, hear me roar!", or something like that.  I was relieved that I no longer have to worry about remembering to call him Stitch.  And now I can finally tell my family that Stitch was really just Schmendrick in disguise.  I'm not quite sure why, but my mom won't stop asking about him.  It's actually quite annoying.  She will however be relieved that he is indeed safe and I can stop dodging her questions.
I am a bit worried about him though. We were talking about one of our recent battles and he mentioned something about Stitch making too many mistakes. “Schmendrick would have never made those mistakes.” He said.
I’m not quite sure what he meant by that. Did he have some sort of spell cast on him that altered his persona? I have never even heard of something like that. But then again, the effects of magic surprise and astound me on a weekly basis. I was under the impression that he only made changes to his appearance. But it seems to me that he truly believes that Stitch is an entirely different person than Schmendrick.
No one else really seemed to be much concerned or bothered by his statement, however. So I can only assume that in order to fully be disguised he had to do more than look different. He had to become somebody different. At some point he was able to evaluate his experience as Stitch and was not happy with the results and therefore cancelled the spell. I guess that seems like a plausible explanation.
At any rate, I’m glad to have Schmendrick back. Looking back on things, Stitch really did seem to make a lot more mistakes than Schmendrick ever did. And he was not nearly as insightful as Schmendrick either.
Anyway, it looks like we’ll finally be leaving this town. Praise Omni!! I do feel like we at least accomplished something while we were in this horrible place. We were able to banish at least one of the Fallen and we were able to help these freaky citizens with their ghost problem. Before we go though, we still need to see if we can find a way into the basement. That’s where this supposed power source is.
I wonder if these people will even know how to rebuild this tower and make it function like it used to. This tower was supposedly some sort of defense mechanism. I don’t know how often it was used, but I can’t imagine they will be able to use it any time soon, if ever. We still don’t even know if the power source is even here.
I guess we’d better stay at least a little bit longer to see if we can get some more answers. I’m sure Kess will be pleased. He really seems to like this place. I know he says he doesn’t but I can tell.

We finally left glimmering today! I thought the day would never come. As we headed back to the inn to pack up our things, however, we saw a most unusual sight. I don’t think I would have noticed it if Kess hadn’t froze in place and gawked on in absolute horror or envious pleasure. I’m not quite sure which one. But he was definitely staring; more than any man should, watching in awe as a man walked by in some assless chaps. I turned to see where the man came from and it appeared that he was leaving one of the local clothing shops. I watched in amusement as Kess began grasping for air. Apparently he was so enthralled in the situation that he had forgotten to breath. I waited for him to gain his composure and he scuttled back to catch up to the rest of the group.
We gathered our things and then collected a sizeable reward, which was definitely unexpected. Then we continued our journey to Pangoria. Before leaving, however, I snuck over to the clothing store and bought Kess a pair of those assless chaps. He will either love them or hate them. Either way I think I should get some amusement out of it.
Our next spot on the map was a place called Knight’s Bridge. The town was cut in two by a huge ravine going down the center. The only way across, for who knows how long, is a toll bridge. Before paying the toll we decided it best to stay the night. As we entered one of the inns we met a crazy old man who kept asking if we wanted to see a trick. I love tricks! He walked outside and began waving his finger around and out came a huge fireball that crashed into the side of one of the local buildings. Luckily all of the people in its path dove out of harm’s way. Shocked, we reminded him that magic was frowned upon and hostile magic in city limits was illegal. He frantically looked to his right then to his left and then he disappeared. I figured that was the last we would see of him but I guess I was wrong.
Later that night Flaming Pete, as we named him since he couldn’t recall his own name, returned and said he had a prophecy for us. We were to find a boy, ironically named Pete, to help us in our venture which would ultimately save the world. But we only had two weeks to complete our task or we would fail.
Not wasting any time we left at first light to find Pete. I don’t know why we trusted this crazy old lune but there seems to be at least some merit in his words because, thanks to his directions, we actually did find a boy named Pete. Well, we actually found Pete’s mom. Pete had been abducted and was being held prisoner in a keep up on the hill.
Upon arriving at the keep we were greeted by a huge stone creature of all things and demanded to talk to the owner. Our audience was refused so we stormed the keep and began pounding the doorman to pieces. We were annialating the creature before he got one good shot in, but that would be his last. He tossed me from the cliff and I plummeted to the earth. I cursed at the cowardous creature and hurried back up to the keep as fast as possible. Darby met me part way there and suggested that maybe he should heal me before I continue in the fight.   By the time I made it back up to the top the creature had been destroyed and the gate was opened.
I ran in behind to find the others checking doors. Most of them were locked so Griswold and Schmendrick began making their own. We headed in the direction where we thought Pete to be, based on Griswold’s spell. We descended further and further into the basement but were ultimately blocked by some magical barrier. We headed back up to the top to search for other areas. There was a small room near the stable that I thought they may have used to teleport so we shoved a couple of horses in there just in case it would impede their success in teleporting. Vance kept asking me if I wanted to explore some of the other doors. I thought he meant the doors we passed in the basement so I said I wasn’t interested. What I didn’t realize is there was another door just as we came inside that I had overlooked. As soon as he pointed that out I rushed over there with him and we started down the stairs. I can’t believe we missed this!
As we went down the stairs we came in contact with, what Schmendrick refers to as, a magic mist. We were definitely at a disadvantage at that point. We didn’t know how many opponents we had and we couldn’t see them. On top of that the mist is disorienting for some. Vance and I were shortly joined by the others. We made our way through the mist and began to make some headway on our opponents, who appeared to be some sort of wolf type creatures. I heard Vance crying out in pain and I was afraid for his life and the lives of the rest of our group. Mort and I can handle ourselves but the rest of them can hardly take a beating, in these conditions anyway, that is, without a healer present. I yelled out several times for someone to go tell Schmendrick to use the orb but I wasn’t sure if anyone heard me or not. Apparently someone heard me because all at once the mist started to vanish and then everything went completely black. Vance managed to fish out a torch and by the time it was lit our foes were gone.
A huge crashing sound came from the basement. Upon further investigation we determined that there was some sort of creature trapped in the basement. But from the looks of things it wasn’t going to be trapped for much longer. We decided it best to vacate the premises as the keep was seemingly increasing in instability.
Darby came down to greet us and immediately attended to Vance. We continued our search for Pete but it looks like they got him out. We headed back upstairs to find some of the mercenaries. They laid down their weapons and told us that they had taken Pete out of one of the windows down the side of the keep.
We began chasing a group of armed men as one of them broke off from the group on horseback. Everyone began chasing the two on horseback supposing that one of them was Pete. Convinced it was a decoy I pursued the armed men. I tried to seek the assistance of Vance and Alex but they declined. No matter!!! Spooner and I engaged in combat with the men. Spooner was fierce and between the two of us we were able to subdue all of the men by either death or surrender.
After a brief interrogation we were lead to some wolf tracks which lead to a cave. To make a long story short, the man from the castle surrendered Pete to us with the understanding that we would leave and never come back. Mort was disgusted with this man and it was hard for him to leave without delivering some punishment.   Reluctantly, however, he walked away happy that we had at least accomplished the goal of saving the boy and continuing our mission to save the world.
We then headed back to Knight’s Bridge. We paid the toll, crossed the bridge, and spent the night on the nicer side of town. We were able to get 2 gold for the loot from the keep and discovered that there was now a dragon on the loose that was pillaging local farms and what not. We all looked at each other knowing that is probably what was in the basement of the keep.
When morning arrived we continued our journey. We passed several small villages along our way that had claimed to have seen the dragon. Some of the villages were completely destroyed by fire.   We arrived at a small town just outside of Pangoria where we stopped to stay the night. With all this talk about a dragon I figured I had better stay outside with Spooner. In the middle of the night I was awakened by Spooner frantically trying to break free from his chain. I looked behind and saw an enormous red dragon flying straight at Spooner and I.  He would be on top of us in a matter of seconds. Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to free Spooner in time I decided it best to run and try to lure the dragon away from Spooner. My plan failed however, and the dragon plucked the tree from the ground with Spooner still attached. During this time I felt a feeling that I haven’t felt in a long time. I felt frantic and helpless. I’m guessing it was fear. Regardless, it was unpleasant. I was able to make it back to town without harm but sadly, Spooner did not.
The following morning we continued on to Pangoria. The walk felt extremely long and lonely.

After finding a place to stay, Schmendrick went to find his lab, only to find the place surrounded by guards. We were informed that no one was allowed inside by order of the Prince. So we headed back to the inn to come up with another plan. On our way back Schmendrick suggested that I enter the tournament as we would probably be here for a while. Knowing the tournament could be a great way to make some money for my family, not to mention the kind of publicity it could give to Tristen if I actually won, I was more than happy to enter the tournament as Crespin of Tristen. Kess entered the tournament as well as Kess of Griswold’s Irregulars and Mort entered as Mort of the Sentinels. I teased with Mort that he probably shouldn’t enter the tournament but I don’t think he thought I was very funny.

Later on that day Schmendrick came in contact with an old friend who knew a way into the lab area but only those with magical abilities could get in. So Schmendrick and Mort went while Kess, Vance, and I waited.

Sometime later Willy came popping in and asked us to escort Pete to the labs. Willy guided us through the sewers of all places right to a dead end and said here it is. After some coaxing he convinced Pete that he could walk through the wall and in an instant they were gone. Seeing that the three of us were definitely unable to pass through the wall as Willy and Pete did, we all went back to the inn and tried to bide the time until the tournament started the next day.

When morning finally came we rushed down to the arena to see who we would be facing and what time our first match would begin. I was happy to see that my first match was in just a half an hour. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a tournament match and was aching to feel the rush and hear the cheering of the crowd.

As I entered the arena for the first time I was a bit taken back. This place made Tristen’s arena look like a pig pen. It was enormous and there were so many spectators. I’ve never seen such a thing. It makes me wonder if James didn’t have the right idea. It would seem that this is a lot better way to earn money for my family and there’s not the huge risk of dying on any given day.

I am a bit torn though.  As much as I hate to admit it, Mort is really starting to rub off on me. The more I travel the country the more I see the pain and hurt suffered by innocent people. And I feel proud to know that I have helped ease that pain in some ways.

But I need to think of my family first. My father is no longer around to provide for them and if I’m not going to then no one will. And the recent fire caused by the demon has been a huge setback as it caused a ton of damage to the store, not to mention all of the looting that took place during the crisis. My mom and my sisters are the most important to me and I have to think of them before I think of anything else. If I am able to do some good and help others in the process then life is that much better.

As these thoughts rushed through my mind I advanced on my foe. The battle was somewhat quick but I tried to make a good show for the crowd. My foe was easily defeated and the crowd seemed to be pleased. I defeated 6 more foes during the next 3 days, including Timothy, Vance’s friend, before I faced an opponent that I’ve been both longing and fearing to face.

A flood of thoughts raced through my head. “If I could somehow manage to beat Mort than maybe I could get out of his shadow. I would have to be quick though and extremely alert. I don’t think I could take more than a couple of blows from his axe before being subdued and even that may be enough to kill me.   His armor is so thick and he is extremely resilient. I’ve seen him take a slew of attacks from multiple foes without even the slightest hint of falling. My only chance is to take out his weapon arm.”

The fight began with less than desirable results. I got a bit too eager and dropped the sword from my left hand. Mort, the lard that he is, stepped right on it. I’m surprised he didn’t snap it right in half. At that point I had lost my biggest advantage. My heart sunk as my chances of winning the match plummeted.
But Omni was with me that day. I was able to dodge his every strike. A bit overzealous and impatient on one occasion Mort missed badly and took out his own shield arm. Omni smiled on me and I struck time and time again, first crippling his weapon arm and then taking out his leg before he finally tapped out. I was in awe. Not only did I beat him, but I owned him. How was this possible? I stood in amazement for but a second. I looked about as the crowd was chanting my name. I raised my sword in triumph as they erupted in unified applause.

It was at that moment I realized that Mort was devastated. I heard him mutter to himself that he had failed his order as he hung his head in sorrow. He was quickly healed and he trudged off of the field muttering a dismal “congratulations” as he shook my hand.

In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined a better outcome. I have finally proved to myself that I could beat him. The jealousy and the need to be better than Mort has been ousted from my soul. I have finally escaped the grasps of his enormous shadow. And yet, I now wish that I could take it all back! Because I realize now that although my dream has been realized, Mort’s has since been shattered.
