Zakhar Kitaev

Prologue

Many of my ancestors were members of the Mystic Assembly. It has long been a family tradition that the most magically talented children become curators and researchers when they've proved themselves ready. The submersion of the island and our migration to the Silothreni lands changed all of that. Most of the curators abandoned their purpose when the museum was no longer accessible, but my father and a few others felt that their responsibility continued. Although the Mystic Assembly was all but dissolved, my father made me as much of a part of it as he could. He has given our ancestors' most sacred secrets and given me the charge to protect them until the Mystic Assembly is reorganized.

Phoenix

I spent several years in House Dagan. Sylwith is close to our tongue and many of the Silothreni traditions are very similar to ours. It seemed like a reasonable place to live. However, there was one serious drawback; we were regarded as the Wyred, second class citizens that consisted entirely of magic-users. If we were to continue our research in the land, we would be forced to do so in a large supervised structure known as the labyrinth. I think that's largely part of why my father gave me our ancestors' records. He felt that being an official member of the Mystic Assembly required that he stay with the majority of our people and work to find a new home for us. Me? I was never officially made a member. I was only thirteen when the island sank.

When I was old enough, I decided to head to Phoenix with several other Aerinal, the magic capital of the entire known land. It seemed like the best place to go to study my family's secrets. I was mostly right, too. I was allowed a great deal of privacy to study the ancient magics and even practice them, so long as they didn't cause any problems. Eventually, in order to provide myself with more access to the resources of Phoenix, I decided to become a citizen.

My ancestors' magic proved to be extremely difficult to perform and very exhausting. I think it left me a bit susceptible because, looking back on it, what I decided to do is a bit distasteful. I became involved with a group that researched modifying the physical body using elemental and other magical essences.

Experimentation

Shortly after getting involved with the research, the entire group and I went through a portal to a city in the Suul Empire. That's when I learned how despicable the research really was that I was doing. The Suul mages performed several experiments on their slaves to see what kind of results they could get. It helped further along the research, but the pain the slaves endured was immense. Most of them couldn't even survive the process. Those that did suffered from all manner of illness and torture and were eventually executed.

Although I didn't like seeing the subjects endure what they did, I couldn't just stop. We were learning so much! Continuing the research might eventually leave me a way to discover how I can perform my ancestors' magic without leaving me exhausted. However, I did eventually become the first volunteer subject. I felt that doing so justified my actions. After all, if I was willing to go through what I helped to make others experience, it was ok, right? I was wrong. No one should ever endure the degree of torture I experienced.

Byzeris

I'm not exactly sure of all the details, as I was very weak and confined to my room, but the Suul city in which we were conducting our research was completely sacked. A Celestine resistance group that had been conquered in the last decade or so, managed to release some strange magical plague on the city that left it almost defenseless. Shortly after the plague took effect, they marched in and slaughtered every Suul there. Many of the subjects of our experiments were rescued. I was among them, assumed to be a prisoner like them.

We were taken to a rebel-owned city called Byzeris. I've had a few months to reflect since coming here. I learned a lot from my research and I'm definitely not going to abandon the knowledge I obtained, but I'll never take part in such work again.

I recently learned that there's a mercenary group made up of some of surviving subjects. Rumor has it that they've each acquired some special powers from the experiments. I think I'll join them so I can study the long term effects. They shouldn't recognize me. I never took part in performing the actual experiments. Furthermore, I was always careful to make sure I was concealed using illusions.

Important NPCs

Anzhela Karataev

A female Aerinal mage that formally administrates what's left of the Mystic Assembly. Anzhela has what many Aerinal would say to be very angelic and beautiful features, representative of her name, which means "Angel" in her tongue. Further complimenting her name, she's known to be very calm and kind. She also has a strong sense of tradition.

Artem Kitaev

Zakhar's younger brother by two years, Artem, is extremely stubborn and strong-willed. Like the rest of his family, he frequently develops his magical talent. His skills, magical and mundane, are primarily focused on dealing with communication. He has always been fairly charismatic and politically-minded.

Kirill Kitaev

Zakhar's father and one of the few members of the Mystic Assembly that still conducts research in its behalf. Kirill, is deep-thinking, traditional, and very logical. He gave Zakhar all of their ancestors' private magical research with the hopes of protecting it from the strict and controlling Silothreni government. He feels it contains secrets too powerful to be allowed to become a part of the Mystic Assembly's public archive, let alone that of the Silothreni labyrinth.

Sergei Chesnokov

A friend of Zakhar and one of the Aerinal that went with him to Phoenix. Sergei comes from a line of well known Aerinal artists, craftsman, and enchanters. Phoenix caught his attention when he learned of the vast libraries and resources available to citizens.

Taras Malikov

A rival of Zakhar and one of the Aerinal that went with him to Phoenix. Taras is an elementalist that was intrigued by Phoenix the moment he heard about it; first by the name and second by it's known purpose to expand magic. The name he found interesting because he has always dreamed of finding a legendary phoenix since he was a child.

Vera Kitaev

Zakhar's mother and a childhood friend of Anzhela Karataev. She also joined the Mystic Assembly, where she met Zakhar's father, but never was a very prominent member of the organization. She supports Kirill in his research, but conducts none of her own.

Veronika Kitaev

Zakhar's younger sister by four years and an enthusiast for magic. If she were older, she might have gone with Zakhar to Phoenix. Veronika, like her older brother Artem, is also fairly charismatic. She aspires to become a respected member of the Mystic Assembly and, one day, succeed Anzhela.

Organizations

Mystic Assembly

An organization of Aerinal mage scholars dedicated to studying and expanding magic. It was never formally disbanded but its structure mostly collapsed when the Aerinal were forced to leave their island. Under the direction of Anzhela Karataev, some of the more dedicated members of the organization continue to research and develop magic in the Silothreni and Sierranai lands.

20th of Highharvest, 1983 FG

Gregor, the man in charge of the mercenary company, heard I was looking to find some work and hired me. He said they needed another mage, particularly one with talent in illusions.

The company just recently bought an old house that it's going to renovate in order to have an office as a base for operations. Gregor's going to stay there to arrange future missions and manage existing ones.

I've been assigned to help the primary team on its next mission. We'll be leaving tomorrow.

23rd of Highharvest, 1983 FG

We arrived in Riverton earlier this evening. Our objective is to recruit a mage and his coven for the rebellion.

My companions, all of which endured the experimentation, seem fairly normal. Their hair has regrown and none of them are ill. There's talk of some of them possessing new powers but I haven't learned many details yet.

In the group are four men named Bernard, Fisher, Pincher, and Malkus; and two women named Bridgette and Candace. There are also two other men that didn't come on this mission; Kirpu and Rico.

Berndard is mute, but that doesn't appear to have anything to do with the experimentation. Word has it that he has the ability to heal. I'm not certain what Fisher and Pincher can do yet, though someone mentioned that Fisher didn't lose his hair when everyone else did. Malkus is also a mystery. The group commonly talks about Bridgette's ability. She can transform into a body of water and maintain the form for hours on end, far longer than any mage can. Candace is another mystery.

24th of Highharvest, 1983 FG

We met a peculiar man named Baxter last night. He had been having strange dreams that involved Malkus and a man with wings, presumably me. I've had my wings concealed by magic for most of the trip, so hearing about them was deeply fascinating. More importantly, Baxter said he had a warning for Malkus.

We were reluctant to investigate at first, but our curiosity got the best of us. We wanted to know more. Unfortunately, that meant we needed to buy a sleeping potion to help the man finish his dream and provide us the full story. As he was sleeping, both Malkus—a mage—and I monitored the man and analyzed his aura. He's incredibly susceptible to magic, a fact that concerns me. The dream could be a gift but it could also be a trap.

Baxter finished his dream and, from it, we learned that there are six women that hang six or seven men. We're not certain if the dream is intended literally or symbolically. What does seem clear, however, is that there's a large hairy man that can cleave a man in two with a swing of his sword. It also appears that Malkus may die and the rest of us will mourn his death. Oh, and Baxter wanted to make sure we know that "the rat bites."

While we were monitoring Baxter, Pincher was off arranging a meeting with the leader of the coven. Malkus met with him today. He managed to link some interesting facts to the dream. First, his coven is made up of six men and six women other than himself. Second, there was recently a large hairy creature in town that had a big sword. Third, the man that set up the meeting was referred to as a "rat" by the leader of the coven.

On another note, I learned that Pincher has the ability to walk on walls and that Candace can fly without the use of wings. The three of us plan to capture a man that Pincher feels may be involved with regularly occuring disappearances in the poor section of town. The leader of the coven said he'll join us if we resolve the issue.

24th of Highharvest (Continued), 1983 FG

We wasted no time in resolving the mess with Alatron's coven and the disappearing vagrants. We split up into two groups and spent the remainder of the evening and well into the night investigating. In the end, we learned that four of the six women of the coven were directly involved in the disappearances.

We discovered some very interesting facts during the investigation. First, Feldon—an old wizard believed to have died in a war several years ago—may be alive and up to secretly casting some extremely powerful magical spells. He appeared to be manipulating the four women from the coven into collecting energy for him with the promise of allowing them to take part in a youth-restoring ritual. The disappearing vagrants and travelers were somehow being sacrificed to provide and store this energy using some ancient magical artifacts.

I don't think Feldon was planning to share that energy with his accomplices and I certainly don't believe a spell endowing eternal youth was all that he was hoping to cast. I think we were carefully guided into taking care of them for him. We believe Rellant—the rat—is working for Feldon and he's the one that provided us most of our information on the coven. More importantly, he was our initial contact for meeting Alatron.

We also learned that Zafeer—another member of the coven—has been leaking information to the Creator's Hand. They claim to have captured his brother and are demanding information in exchange for his life. When we initially learned this fact, we thought it best to leave Zafeer with false information and take the rest of the coven, except the four traitors, with us. However, I've given that a little more thought and decided that'd be unwise. He either needs to be killed or his brother needs to be rescued, lest we risk him revealing too much information about the coven.

Speaking of people that need to be dealt with, I think we'd be unwise to leave Baxter and Rellant roaming freely. They're almost as dangerous to the coven, if not more so, as Zafeer. Baxter could easily be probed magically for all sorts of information and Rellant still hasn't shown us how he can "bite." While the information he has given us has proven to be true and useful, I'm worried what allowing him to live will do. Of course, I'm not certain Baxter's dreams are all that trustworthy, either. I'm pretty certain he has some sort of supernatural talent with dreams due to the fact he mentioned Malkus by name and mentioned my wings, but I'm also fairly certain that Feldon manipulated his visions so as to make sure we'd tie up his loose ends. I think we'll need to kill Rellant and bring Baxter with us. So as to avoid being tracked using Baxter, which may be inevitable, I'll have to do my best to protect him against magical scrying.

I'm not certain if Feldon is even "Feldon." It's quite possible that he's just impersonating the man. Whoever he is, he sounds like he's fairly powerful... it's quite possible that he actually IS Rellant. Illusions aren't that difficult once you've got a little experience. Rellant could simply be one of his many faces. If that's the case, I fear that taking care of Rellant may have to wait or not happen at all.

The four women traitors were executed. One of them, Perii, was an accomplished illusionist. I'm going to see if I can negotiate access to, perhaps even a copy of, her spellbook with Alatron. Even a copy of just the magics required to create illusionary servants and warriors as she did would be ideal.

25th of Highharvest, 1983 FG

We decided it best to try rescuing Zafeer's brother. We also thought it wise to leak the information about Feldon's plot to gather magical energy back to the Creator's Hand, both to prevent Feldon from potentially creating serious problems and to give the Creator's Hand something to pursue while we rescue Zafeer's brother. We figure that word of Feldon having access to an ancient room designed for harnessing great amounts of magic will demand their attention.

Had circumstances been different, I would have liked to study that room. It might have made a great location for studying my ancestors' magic, assuming absorbing the life energy from living creatures isn't the only way to power it. Unfortunately, Feldon appears to be too dangerous to leave it alone.

Prior to our arrival in the city, the Creator's Hand had sent a dwarf and an ogre to Riverton to locate magic-users. They ended up getting caught by the coven traitors and locked up in the undercity, not very far from the magic room. Well, we releasd them and took them to the same, hoping to give them reason to report it. We had already asked Alatron to leak the information about the room and Feldon to Zafeer, but we weren't sure if we could trust him to report it. After all, he's an unwilling spy.

Taking the dwarf and ogre to the room proved to be very fascinating. The ogre began shaking before we even entered the room. As we got closer, he lost his strength and collapsed to the ground. I would have liked to study his aura at that time, but the creature has a sort of sixth sense for magic; I certainly didn't want to be a part of their report. I'm not interested in catching the attention of the Creator's Hand.

After being satisfied with showing the dwarf and the ogre what we could of the area near the room, we left Riverton by boat and accompanied the two to the nearest fort of the Creator's Hand. That's where we believe Zafeer's brother to be. We don't have a defined plan of action yet so I stayed in my room analyzing three of Malkus' magic wands while most everyone else gathered information.

26th of Highharvest, 1983 FG

Rather than sleep, I spent most of last night and this morning flying to and from Riverton. The Creator's Hand had already dispatched a large contingent of its soldiers to Riverton before Zafeer or the two we rescued could have possiblity reported what we told them. As a result, Alatron and the rest of the coven needed warning that the Creator's Hand would be early and that they need to be out of the city by tonight.

It took about five hours to fly there and four to get back, but that's largely because I could ignore the difficult marshes and other terrain below. I suspect the soldiers will arrive in Riverton tomorrow morning at the earliest.

Tonight, after I'm done with a long nap, we plan to sneak into the Creator's Hand's fort, find Zafeer's brother, and slip out. Once again I'll remain in my room while everyone else gathers information and makes plans for the rescue.

27th of Highharvest, 1983 FG

The Creator's Hand knew we were coming. We managed to eliminate their sentries outside, but ended up walking right into an ambush. I'm not certain how they knew about us, but it didn't really matter. A lizard man that was supposedly part of the ambush against us ended up betraying the Creator's Hand and almost single-handedly dropped every soldier in the room. The slaughter was a miraculous site.

The lizard man let us go. He didn't explain why. He just told us to get the mage we came for and leave. We followed orders. We rescued Zafeer's brother, left the fort, and left the town. We didn't know what was going on and we weren't interested in finding out.

[day] of [month], 1983 FG

The mission was a success. We brought back most of the coven safely from Riverton, which, by the way, appeared to be burning as we passed by it on the way back. I'm certain the burning was related to Feldon. Either the Creator's Hand successfully destroyed the ancient magic room or Feldon used its energy in retaliation.

We're going to depart on another mission tomorrow. We had a few days to rest between the conclusion of our last mission and the beginning of this next one. Still, I wouldn't say it was much rest. One of the rebel generals had died while we were away. His public funeral services were interrupted by a bunch of suicidal zealots that were somehow causing themselves to explode all throughout the crowd. Aside from momentary chaos, the zealots didn't really seem to accomplish anything. If the Suul were able to place them in the city, it seemed unwise of them to use them the way they did. Now the rebels are aware that they're around.

Our mission is to silence a mage named Ethan. Supposedly he knows something that the rebels don't want him sharing.
